CONSERVATION
J. Gyurácz, Cs. Szinetár: Őrség National Park
The authors summarize the preparation projects for the making of the
Őrség National Park.
T. Kelemen: The Third Frog-saving Project near Balogunyom
This year migration started two weeks earlier than last year due to
the weather. However the peak date was the same: March 25th.
The author lists the numbers of the saved species in a chart.

Cs. Németh: Bird Protection and Forestry in the Kőszeg Mountains
The author calls attention to the indicator role of the woodpecker and
flycatcher species, especially the white-backed woodpecker and the red-breasted
flycatcher. He also describes methods of management they use to improve
the natural aspect of the forests. These are: temporal and spatial
limits to tree cutting, protection of forest structure elements.
Cs. Németh: Barn Owl Nesting Observations in Vas County
The author exposes two cases when endangered nestfuls of barn owls were
saved. He emphasizes the importance of agricultural buildings as
nesting sites and proposes practical considerations.

R. Dankovics: Data Collection and Monitoring of the Amphibian and Reptile Fauna
The article summarizes this year’s results, such as discovering a new
site of the Lacerta viridis, the habitat needs of the Podarcis muralis
in the Kőszeg Mountains and his observations on the breeding of amphibians
in the region.
R. Dankovics: Remarks on the Observations about Salamander Patterns
The author compares his own observations on pattern with those of other
authors and comments on the pattern variety, the methods of observation
and data collection and the sources of errors. He also proposes that
photos should be used instead of drawings about individuals.
Cs. Németh: Observations on the Behaviour and Feeding of the Eagle Owl
The eagle owl is spreading in the Kőszeg Mountains. The author
summarizes his observations on activity, behaviour, feeding and nesting.
Its most active period starts just before dark. It was heard most
actively calling on March 4th. It spends the day on its favourite
pine tree, where it can be observed from a very short distance. It
feeds mostly on hedgehogs in left-off fields. It probably nests in
the area, too.
J. Gyurácz: Survey of Nesting Bee-eaters in Vas County in 2001
The chart demonstrates the results of the bee-eater and sand martin
surveys (in pairs) in the known and newly discovered sites. The author
found a nestful probably predated by foxes and a strange nesting hole as
well.

P. Bánhidi: Conservation and Bird Ringing Camp in Tömörd in 2001
The spring ringing camp was held between April 29th and May 6th and
198 individuals of 34 species were ringed. The autumn ringing camp
started on August 5th and ended on November 18th. It does not seem
practical to stretch the end date so long and next year we plan to have
a ringing camp between late July and early November. The chart shows
the species, their numbers in the spring ringing, the nesting pairs in
May and the autumn ringing sums. Two foreign ringed birds were recovered,
a willow warbler and a goldcrest.

The authors report on the characteristics of the surveyed forests –
decreasing in size an the whole. They mapped the nests in winter
and checked them in late spring. Black storks have disappeared.
Nesting birds they found: buzzard, raven, goshawk.

The nestbox colony is situated near an oak forest, among dogrose, hawthorn,
oak wild pear and pine trees. The small mammal was found in spring
and autumn as well, always in the B-type nestboxes. The author lists
his findings in a chart of dates, number of nestbox, number of the animals
and the species of the tree.

B. Keszei: Endemic Ornithogalum x degenianum in Vas County
The author found this endemic permanent hybrid plant (described first
in 1927) in the north of Vas county. This rarity deserves more attention.
B. Keszei: Data on the Vegetation and Flora of Kenyeri Airport
The area is like a dry grassland. It came about with the clearing of the oak forest and grazing as well as stamping. In summer it burns out. The author lists the species of interest.

Cs. Lőrincz: Birdwatcher Kindergarten
The author has 5 years’ experience. She describes children as
genuinely interested in nature, who have no disgust of bugs or frogs, which
they learn from adults. They enjoy playing outdoors and learning about
birds in various programmes the author lists.
Cs. Lőrincz: Birds of my Feeding Table, Children’s Competition
This year about 100 drawings, poems and compositions arrived and were
exhibited. The author lists the winners.
T. Kelemen: Birdwatcher School
Quite a few enthusiastic children become involved in the activities
of our society as teenagers as well. The author lists the programmes
of the birdwatcher school this year.
T. Kelemen: Regional Lap of the Day of Birds and Trees National Competition
In Szombathely 13 teams participated and the Neumann János Primary School
came the first, who performed excellently in the national final coming

CHRONICLE
Á. Lepold, A. Ruff: Account of the SEEN Conference in Poland
In 2000 two members of our society reported the conference on the results
of the migration research based on the ringing data of Sumony and Tömörd.
Encouraged by the Polish colleagues orientation experiments started in
the autumn Tömörd ringing camp.
J. Gyurácz: International Ornithological Conferences in 2001
In March the author participated in the conference of the EBCC where
the results and methods of monitoring and population surveys were discussed.
In August at the conference of the EOU the lectures were about the investigation
of the biological obstacles of the yearly cycles, e.g. the problems of
migration and nesting.
Z. Lepold: Our Society on the Internet
Our website started to operate in January and has an English version
too. Several hundreds of people have visited it so far.
